A short film I made about the book single

These shots were taken by Paul Whibley, seated in what looks to be a pretty good spot in the concert hall of Opera House during the premier of Spirit of Akasha at the Sydney Festival in January. The Windy Hills are on stage playing the opening track to the film with Sydney Secondary College Children’s Choir.

First band lost 1989. Darren Gover, AK and Kye Fitzgerald. We used to rehearse at Terry’s house on Saturday mornings when he was down working at the HB office (ex Guns & Ammo wearhouse on Waterloo Street). Often we’d go overtime, Terry would come home, walk into the room and say, “That will be enough of that.”

A few weeks after the fact, Terry asked us if we’d like to record some music for the film he was working on. It turned out the recordings we did were with the legendary Tim Gaze from Taman Shud. I’ve worked on and off with Tim ever since. Matt Corby recently recorded Tim’s brilliant song First Things First from Morning of the Earth for re-imagined CD that was set free in January 2014 — I guess it’s easy when you start off with a great song! The Windy Hills, covered Shud’s Sea The Swells for the same release.  In the pix that’s Gazey in the background with the pony tail twidling with some reel knobs…

A few images of the boards I shaped in New York while I was there. Kindly assisted in the process by Joseph Falcone, lending me his shaping bay and planing skills! The glass work is by Mark Petrocelli of Faktion Surfboards, no doubt these boards were all glassed with a white blanket of snow outside. Thanks Mark for the classy work!

Pictures of Jose and his 7’10. The tail of the channelled Tiger Toe and Traditional fish shaped for the Pilgrim store. And the glassers nightmare, the Dreamboard, shaped for Schultzy. As a tribute to Lou, each of the ten boards I shaped was signed with the title of one of his wonderful songs.

On the Road as of tomorrow. Getting paper templates ready for some kind of overseas shaping, Europe/NYC. The paper curves created from original Parmenter /Frye/Mackie templates. Some of the Parmenter templates remain in their original paper states, uncut even. Dented from years of use and lack of attention. Easily fixed though, with a solid wooden curve and the board moves on…the paper template placed back in the rack. I noticed this conversation with Terry Fitzgerald I’d scribbled on the wall as I was packing up, it seemed to make sense to my situation…“to boldly go.”

I’ve had some requests to make prints from Single. I’ll be making editions of 10 of each image.

Couple of snaps from a small beachbreak session on Tiger Toe 2.

Seen here, Surfer Magazine Vol 2 No.1, I can honestly say we’d never seen this cover when we designed the cover of Litmus. It’s classic to see how similar it is to what we created. Even down to the stance of the surfer, Derek Hynd literally mimicking his wave position and posture. The footage of Derek riding a Skip Frye Fish was captured by Jon Frank at Jefferies Bay, I took this still from the footage and then dragged it over a photocopier to get the odd effect the black has. I then painted the image with white to highlight what i wanted to stand out. Mark Sutherland hand rendered the Litmus lettering, in a similar style to the title of his Dream animation that featured in the film.
